Jan 19, 2021 A note about ubuntu-drivers command-line method # 3. We can also change drivers without the use of the X GUI/Windows desktop. For these purposes, Ubuntu comes with a unique command called ubuntu-drivers to manage binary drivers for NVidia and other devices. This is an alternative to the apt command/apt-get command we used earlier. Nov 11, 2020 Installing NVIDIA drivers on Ubuntu is an easy task that can be done in less than a minute. Ubuntu includes a tool that can detect the graphics card model and install the appropriate NVIDIA drivers. Alternatively, you can download and install the drivers from the NVIDIA site. Tried these drivers (and several others including the one that came with the hardware): EasycapDC60STK1160Grabber32&64bit USB-AVCPTSetupForWin7.zip EasyCap W7 W10 x64.zip DriversSMIGrabber26012011.zip. OS is windows 7 64 bit. Hardware ID is: USB VID05E1&PID0408&REV0005&MI00 USB VID05E1&PID0408&MI00. Any ideas out there? So, newer drivers have not only security problems. Here's something we missed with the latest NVIDIA driver updates - turns out that NVIDIA had multiple security issues that they put out in a recent security bulletin. Multiple issues affect both Windows and Linux, across multiple versions of the official NVIDIA proprietary driver.

NVIDIA-smi ships with NVIDIA GPU display drivers on Linux, and with 64bit Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. Nvidia-smi can report query information as XML or human readable plain text to either standard output or a file. For more details, please refer to the nvidia-smi documentation. Example nvidia-smi output.

The ones that affect the Linux desktop are:

  • CVE‑2021‑1052: 'NVIDIA GPU Display Driver for Windows and Linux contains a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer (nvlddmkm.sys) handler for DxgkDdiEscape or IOCTL in which user-mode clients can access legacy privileged APIs, which may lead to denial of service, escalation of privileges, and information disclosure.'
  • CVE‑2021‑1053: 'NVIDIA GPU Display Driver for Windows and Linux contains a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer (nvlddmkm.sys) handler for DxgkDdiEscape or IOCTL in which improper validation of a user pointer may lead to denial of service.'
  • CVE‑2021‑1056: 'NVIDIA GPU Display Driver for Linux contains a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer (nvidia.ko) in which it does not completely honor operating system file system permissions to provide GPU device-level isolation, which may lead to denial of service or information disclosure.'

There's also some vGPU security issues too, which also affect Linux but they're not regular desktop stuff.

If you want to make sure you're totally safe you should update to the latest driver in the series you're using. Going by the information on the NVIDIA security page you should be good on (or better) 460.32.03 which is the latest 'Production Branch' driver, 450.102.04 and 390.141 being the latest Legacy driver.

You can look out for future security info here from NVIDIA.
